Joint Injections
Our evidence-based programmes combine targeted pain relief with data-driven rehabilitation to deliver measurable, lasting results. Move beyond temporary fixes and invest in your long-term joint health.
Why a Simple Injection Isn't Always the Answer
An injection can be a powerful tool for reducing pain and inflammation. However, it often only addresses the symptom, not the underlying cause. Without a structured rehabilitation plan, pain can return as the injection wears off — leaving you back where you started.
At The Physio Lounge, we do things differently. We've developed a comprehensive approach that pairs the clinical precision of injection therapy with a robust, data-driven rehabilitation framework. This ensures we not only manage your pain but also rebuild your strength, restore your function, and equip you with a plan to prevent future issues.

What to Expect at Your Appointment
We want you to feel informed, comfortable, and confident at every stage. Here is exactly what happens from the moment you book to the end of your programme.
Booking Your Appointment
When you get in touch, we'll have a brief conversation about your symptoms and what you're hoping to achieve. We'll confirm that injection therapy is appropriate for you and recommend the programme that best fits your needs. You'll receive a booking confirmation with everything you need to know before you arrive.
Arriving at the Clinic
Our Winwick Rehab & Performance hub has dedicated parking spaces right outside the clinic. Look out for the "Patient Parking" signs when you arrive at the building. You will be greeted by our friendly admin team and offered refreshments while you wait for your appointment.
Your Assessment
Your specialist clinician will take a thorough history of your symptoms and carry out a full physical assessment of the affected joint. For Optimise and Performance patients, this also includes VALD strength testing — an objective, data-driven measurement of your muscle strength and function. This gives us a clear baseline to measure your progress against throughout the programme.
Consent & Pre-Injection Discussion
Before your injection, your clinician will walk you through a digital consent form covering your medical history, any contraindications, and the risks and benefits of the procedure. You'll have the opportunity to ask any questions. Once you're happy to proceed, you'll sign the form digitally — and a personalised aftercare information email will be sent to you automatically so you have everything you need to refer back to at home.
The Injection
The injection itself is a quick procedure — typically taking just a few minutes. Your clinician will position you comfortably, clean the area, and administer the injection with care and precision. Most patients describe it as a brief sharp sensation or mild pressure. You'll be asked to rest for a short period afterwards before leaving the clinic.
Leaving the Clinic
Before you leave, your clinician will talk you through what to expect over the coming days — including normal post-injection sensations, activity guidance, and when to expect the injection to take effect. Your next appointment will be booked before you go, and your aftercare email will already be waiting in your inbox.
Your Rehabilitation Sessions(Optimise & Performance)
Once the injection has had time to settle — usually within the first week — your rehabilitation sessions begin. These are one-to-one, 30-minute sessions with your clinician, focused on rebuilding strength and restoring function in the affected joint. Each session is progressive and built around your personalised strength plan. Optimise patients attend 2 sessions; Performance patients attend 4.
Your 6-Week Review
At six weeks, you'll return for a review appointment to assess how you've responded to the injection and your rehabilitation. We'll repeat your outcome measures and — for Performance patients — re-run your VALD strength test to compare directly against your baseline. You'll receive a clear summary of your progress and a discussion about next steps, whether that's continuing independently, further support, or planning ahead for long-term joint health.
Staying in Touch
We'll check in with you after your programme to see how you're getting on. We'll also reach out at six months to review your progress and discuss whether any further treatment or a repeat injection is appropriate. Our goal is to be a long-term partner in your joint health — not just a one-off appointment.
Frequently Asked Questions
A joint injection delivers medication directly into or around a joint to reduce pain and inflammation. Corticosteroid injections are used to rapidly calm inflammation, while hyaluronic acid injections restore the joint's natural lubricating fluid. Both are used when other conservative treatments have not provided sufficient relief, or when a targeted approach is needed to create a window for rehabilitation.
Corticosteroid injections are powerful anti-inflammatories that work quickly — often within a few days — to reduce pain and swelling. They are best suited for acute inflammatory conditions such as bursitis, tendinopathy, and frozen shoulder. Hyaluronic acid injections work differently: they restore the joint's natural lubricating fluid, reducing friction and improving mobility. They are primarily used for osteoarthritis and offer longer-lasting relief of 6–12 months. Your clinician will recommend the most appropriate option based on your assessment.
This varies by injection type and individual. Corticosteroid injections typically begin to take effect within 2–5 days, with maximum benefit felt within 1–2 weeks. Hyaluronic acid injections generally take a little longer — most patients notice improvement within 2–4 weeks, with the full effect building over 4–8 weeks. It is normal to experience some mild soreness at the injection site for 24–48 hours after the procedure.
We advise patients not to drive themselves to and from their injection appointment as a precaution. If you have received an injection into a lower limb joint (knee, hip, ankle), you should not drive until normal sensation and control has fully returned. Please arrange for someone to collect you, or plan to use public transport on the day of your injection.
We recommend relative rest for 24–48 hours following your injection — avoiding strenuous activity, heavy lifting, and high-impact exercise. After this period, gentle activity is encouraged and will be guided by your clinician and your personalised aftercare plan. For Performance pathway patients, your in-clinic cryotherapy session will help manage the initial post-injection response.
For corticosteroid injections, the general recommendation is no more than 3–4 injections per joint per year, with a minimum of 3 months between injections. This is to minimise the risk of cartilage and soft tissue changes associated with repeated steroid use. Hyaluronic acid injections do not carry the same restriction and can generally be repeated as needed, typically every 6–12 months depending on the product used and individual response.
All medical procedures carry some risk. The most common side effect is a temporary post-injection flare — mild soreness and swelling at the injection site lasting 24–48 hours. Less common risks include infection, which is minimised by strict aseptic technique, skin or fat atrophy at the injection site with steroids, and temporary blood sugar elevation in diabetic patients. Your clinician will discuss all risks with you during the consent process, and you will receive full written information via your automated aftercare email.
Most patients describe the injection as a brief sharp sensation or pressure, similar to a standard blood test. Our clinicians are experienced and use a careful, precise technique to minimise discomfort. The procedure itself takes only a few minutes. If you are particularly anxious, please let your clinician know — we can take additional time to ensure you feel comfortable and in control throughout.
The right programme depends on your diagnosis, goals, and lifestyle. The Essential programme is suitable for straightforward presentations where targeted pain relief is the primary goal. The Optimise programme is ideal for active individuals who want to address the root cause and build lasting strength alongside their injection. The Performance pathway is recommended for athletes, those with moderate to advanced OA, or anyone who wants the most comprehensive, data-driven approach to recovery. Your clinician will make a formal recommendation at your assessment.
