Hyaluronic Acid Injections – Helping You Move Freely Again
If joint pain is starting to get in the way of your work, hobbies, or even just everyday life, we get how frustrating it can be.
Hyaluronic acid injections are a simple, natural way to give your joints a helping hand — easing pain, improving movement, and helping you feel more like yourself again.
Why People Choose This Treatment
At The Physio Lounge, here’s what our patients tell us they love about hyaluronic acid injections:
- It’s gentle and works with your body, not against it
- You can get relief that lasts 6–12 months from just one treatment
- The care is personal, with clinicians who take time to listen
- It feels good to have a plan that’s built around your goals
What Is Hyaluronic Acid?
Hyaluronic acid is something your body already makes to keep joints moving smoothly. Over time, or if you’ve got osteoarthritis, you can run a bit low on it — which is where the injection comes in.
It’s like topping up your joint’s natural “oil” to:
- Keep things moving more freely
- Cushion and protect the joint surfaces
- Ease stiffness and calm inflammation
How It Can Help You
- Feel the change – Many people notice an improvement within a couple of weeks
- Get moving again – From long walks to gym sessions, everyday activities feel easier
- Protect your joints – Can slow down the effects of wear and tear
- Enjoy long-lasting relief – 6–12 months of comfort is common
- Stay natural – No steroids or heavy drugs, just a boost to your joint’s own support system

FAQs
A joint injection is a procedure where medication, usually a steroid, hyaluronic acid, and sometimes local anaesthetic, is injected directly into or around a joint to reduce pain, inflammation, and improve mobility. This is commonly offered for conditions like osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and other inflammatory joint or soft-tissue conditions.
You may notice reduced pain within minutes if a local anaesthetic is used, but this lasts only a few hours. The anti-inflammatory effect of steroids or hyaluronic acid usually starts within 1–2 days and continues to improve for several weeks. Maximum improvement can take 2–14 days. The benefit can last from several weeks to several months, but varies from person to person.
For desk-based or light work, most people return to normal duties within 24 hours, though some recommend 48 hours of resting the injected joint if possible. For more manual jobs, especially if a weight-bearing joint (knee/ankle) was injected, up to 2–3 days before full duties or heavy lifting is advisable. Your clinician can advise based on your role and injection location.
You should not drive immediately after the procedure, particularly if local anaesthetic was used or if the limb feels weak, numb, or uncomfortable. UK clinics frequently recommend waiting 3–5 hours before driving, or having someone accompany you to drive home. Check your motor insurance policy, as some specify post-procedure restrictions. If the procedure was in an upper limb but you are otherwise well after 15 minutes of clinic monitoring, you may be able to drive, but always check with your clinician and plan transport if possible.
Resting the joint for the first 24-48 hours is recommended, especially for large or weight-bearing joints. Avoid strenuous exercise, heavy lifting, or repetitive activities for about a week after the injection. Gentle movement (not loading, pushing, or pulling) is often encouraged to prevent stiffness.
Yes, this is sometimes possible, but is assessed on an individual basis, with a maximum number of safe doses to avoid side effects. The total amount of steroid is usually limited per session for safety.
For steroids, most clinics recommend no more than 3 to 4 injections in the same joint per year to reduce the risk of joint damage or other side effects.
Complications are rare but can include infection, allergic reaction, temporary increase in pain (“post-injection flare”), subcutaneous fat or skin changes, and very rarely joint or tendon damage. Your clinician will discuss benefits and risks before you consent to the procedure.
Loose, comfortable clothing that allows easy access to the area to be injected is best.
There is some mild discomfort with the injection, but many patients report pain is less than anticipated. A local anaesthetic can be used to minimize pain during the procedure.
